learn more about European health research before we take off for space again

As autumn approaches, with the days getting shorter and the temperatures falling, there is still one topic on the minds of scientists, politicians and the general public alike that is likely to stay in the foreground: climate change. A large part of this week’s CORDIS Express, too, will be dedicated to related issues, looking at the latest results of EU-funded ecosystem, space and climate research as well as new projects. Furthermore, we will learn more about European health research before we take off for space again.
In the ‘News’ section, we first plunge into the water as the EU-funded HERMES project discloses the importance of viruses to the functioning of deep-sea ecosystems. From the deep-sea, we then move on to deep-space in our second news article: A new project under the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) will investigate the influence of cosmic radiation on the Earth’s climate. The climate is at the centre of attention in the third and last story in the ‘News’ section, too, as new research makes scientists re-evaluate current atmospheric circulation models.
This week’s ‘Innovation’ and ‘Future of research’ sections focus on human health. The former will introduce the new euHeart project and its objectives, while the latter looks into EU research that might in the future help to wean addicts off drugs and prevent relapse.
Meanwhile, the ‘Around Europe’section takes us back to the stars, or rather celestial bodies called brown dwarfs. German researchers suggest that those could form a class of their own, separate from stars and planets.
