Global Entrepreneurship Week 17-23Nov08

2008-11-17 00:00
2008-11-23 00:00

Countries all around the world are joining together to carry the banner of Global Entrepreneurship Week, an initiative aimed at young people everywhere. During the week of November 17 - 23, 2008, partner organizations will conduct a range of activities - from simple speeches to comprehensive competitions - designed to inspire, connect, inform, mentor and engage the next generation of entrepreneurs.

The Week is a worldwide initiative that is linking all those willing to embrace it. Host organizations in each participating country are recruiting partners and coordinating related activities. The exact type of these activities, whether online or face-to-face, is limited only by the imaginations of the partners and the participants. And while a list of suggested activities such as invention competitions, entrepreneurship film festivals, networking events, school-based activities, and local entrepreneurship summits - will be available on the website, the actual activities conducted by partners will vary greatly.

And while it may be global in scope, at its heart, the Week is a local initiative that reflects the customs and entrepreneurial culture of each community. After all, what works in Boise, Idaho might be quite different from what works in Bangalore, India.

Global Entrepreneurship Week seeks to:

Inspire: Introduce the notion of enterprising behavior to as many young people under the age of 30 who otherwise might not have considered it as a path in their life

Connect: Network young people across national boundaries in a global effort to find new ideas at the intersection of cultures and disciplines

MEMO/07/401

Brussels, 8th October 2007

More than half of young Europeans keen to start their own business

According to the latest Flash Eurobarometer on entrepreneurial mindset the EU is still lagging behind the US, but over half of the EU’s young people find it desirable to become entrepreneurs within the next five years. The aim of the survey is to have a better understanding of entrepreneurship, to identify what is fuelling entrepreneurial mindsets, what encourages people to become entrepreneurs and which obstacles exist. The results of the 2007 survey will help the Commission in the shaping of its policy-making (see end of this file: Promoting entrepreneurship at all levels).

A. How keen are Europeans to start their own business?

1. Less Europeans than Americans would like to become their own boss

[ Figures and graphics available in PDF and WORD PROCESSED ]

  • 45 % of the Europeans prefer to be self-employed whereas the entrepreneurial urge reaches 61 % in the US.
  • There has been no change compared to previous surveys.

2. Half of Europeans have never thought about starting up a business

EIF and Flemish Government sign Cooperation Agreement and Technical Assistance Contract

EIF and Flemish Government sign Cooperation Agreement and Technical Assistance Contract

On 2 September 2005, the Flemish Government and European Investment Fund signed two agreements: a general cooperation agreement and a technical assistance contract.

The cooperation agreement aims towards developing long-term cooperation between EIB Group and the Flemish Region, through exchanges of information, workshops, staff visits and personnel secondments.

Through the technical assistance contract EIF, on behalf of the Flemish Ministry of Economy, Enterprise, Science, Innovation and Foreign Trade, will assist the Flemish Region both in evaluating programmes providing financial support to start-ups and SMEs, and also in implementing these programmes (i.e. screening potential investees, development investment guidelines, and evaluating potential EIF co-investment).

EIF will notably assist the ARKimedes programme where it will screen potential investee funds and develop operating guidelines, with a view to a possible EIF co-investment. It will also help the Vlaams Innovatiefonds develop guidelines for the screening of small and medium-size enterprises. Furthermore, it will propose possible evolutions of the current "waarborgregeling" system and will review other instruments including the NRC-fonds and the Fonds Vlaanderen Internationaal as well as a potential corporate venturing fund. These and other programmes play a crucial role in the further development and prosperity of the Flemish economy.

As at end August 2005, EIF's activity in Belgium has benefited six venture capital funds for a total investment amount of EUR 37m. As far as SME guarantees are concerned, operations have been concluded with the Participatiefonds (especially for micro-credit, i.e. SMEs of less than 10 employees), as well as with KBC, Fortis, and Beroepskrediet, with total commitments over EUR 166m.
